Just like you wash other areas of your body, you may wonder if you need to wash your mouth as well. The matter of fact is that you need to rinse your mouth to keep it free from bacteria and germs. And you can use a mouthwash to rinse your mouth. Like many other items available, mouthwash also comes with pros and cons.
The benefits of mouthwash
There is a reasonable set of benefits related to the use of mouthwash. Some of those benefits are worth mentioning in this regard.
  • The most obvious benefit of a mouthwash is that you can freshen up your breath with the help of mouthwash.
  • One of the ingredients contained by a mouthwash is the sodium fluoride which helps in fighting cavities. This ingredient also prevents demineralization of your teeth.
  • Some mouthwashes are known for being antibacterial. The biggest benefit of using such mouthwash is that it can reduce the risk of gum infection which can lead to gum diseases. The main ingredient which can help in reversing and preventing the gum inflammation is chlorhexidine.
  • There are certain types of mouthwashes which can help you in the whitening of your teeth. These particular mouthwashes contain hydrogen peroxide which is a bleaching agent. A repeated use of such mouthwash can help in the removal of stains and, ultimately, whitening of your teeth.
  • Inhibition of the growth of bacteria is the major requirement in order to prevent gum disease and cavities. Certain types of mouthwashes come with triclosan and thymol. These are the ingredients which can put a stop to the growth of oral bacteria.

What are the pitfalls?
Certain types of mouthwashes can be dangerous for oral and overall health. And there are some general shortcomings which can be counted as the cons.
  • Many manufacturers add alcohol in the mouthwash. Now, there is a debate over this inclusion of alcohol because it is known to be one of the major reasons for the destruction of tissues in the mouth. Hence, this destruction can raise the chances for oral cancer.
  • Another disadvantage of mouthwashes with alcohol is that they can produce a burning effect in the mouth. Therefore, you will not be quite comfortable if you have sores in your mouth and you have used this mouthwash. Moreover, the irritation can slow down the healing of such sores.
  • With the help of mouthwash, you can get your breath freshened up in a matter of seconds but this freshness is quite temporary. Hence, it is just a way to mask the bad breath.
